China Has not Approved GM Food Production
Recently, Pan Xianzheng, spokesperson and director of the General Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, told reporters at the press conference that the production of genetically modified agricultural products in China follows three principles. First, we strictly follow laws and regulations in the management of genetically modified organisms, and production certificates can only be obtainedthrough safety evaluations. Second, China has developed genetically modified agricultural products in accordance with the roadmap of non-edible, indirect consumption and consumption. Third, we must fully consider the needs and approve the production of crops such as insect-resistant and drought-resistant crops. Pan Xianzheng said that the issue of commercialized production of genetically modified corn should also be implemented in accordance with the above three points. At present, only cotton and papaya are approved for commercial production in China, and no genetically modified grain is approved. The issue of genetic modification is not a minor issue and is a major issue concerning the development of human society in the future. Therefore, for China, some basic principles and starting points in the issue of genetic modification should be determined so as to protect the public’s health and freedom of choice without hindering the development of technology and commercial interests.
