WAL-MART's Takeout Service Will Hurt the Catering Industry
On March 6th, Hong Kong media reported that in order to promote the growth of food sales, Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, launched the first take-away meal, which not only poses a threat to restaurant chains, but also challenges the world’s largest online shopping company, Amazon, German discount retailer Aldi, and ingredients distributor Blue Apron. Wal-Mart executives said that the group currently offers 10 different meals for customers to choose from 250 outlets, such as braised beef withmashed potatoand chicken enchiladas, which range from US$8 to US$10. plans to expand to 2,000 stores by the end of the year. In addition, Wal-Mart also began selling four food kits for a price of US$15 (approximately HK$117) at the store, expanding the services that were previously only available online to physical stores. Many consumers may choose to go to Wal-Mart to buy convenient and fast meals in the future instead of eating out, which may be even worse for the catering industry. Technomi, a research firm, notes that revenue growth at the top 500 restaurants in the United States has been down for two consecutive years.
