The Japanese Government Supports Japanese Enterprises to Participate in ASEAN Smart City Projects
It is reported that the Japanese government plans to set up a funding framework of 250 billion yen (RMB 15.73 billion) to promote the participation of Japanese companies in the smart city projects of 26 cities in 10 ASEAN countries and compete with companies from China and South Korea for ASEAN decarbonization needs. Of the 250 billion yen, 50 billion yen will come from the government’s infrastructure fund "Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Copration for Transportation and Urban Development (JOIN)" and 200 billion yen will come from the credit scale of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) After 2020, South Korea has launched a package of support measures for overseas smart city business. More than 20 countries applied and finally projects from 11 countries were selected. In addition, South Korea will set up a 400 billion won (2.4 billion yuan) fund for smart cities to boost overseas project orders. China will also participate in smart city business in Malaysia that utilizes big data. Japan plans to solicit proposals for smart cities from 26 cities this year, with an aim to select support projects next spring. For cities chosen in open recruitment, Japanese companies will make basic plans or investigate the feasibility. Japan also envisions co-investing with Japanese and local companies to set up new companies to expand smart city business, among other ways. Moreover, as Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has set a goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the Japanese government also hopes to accelerate the decarbonization process of domestic industries by supporting ASEAN smart cities projects.
