Reduced Travel Drags down China's Trade in Services
According to the website of the Ministry of Commerce on November 3, in the first three quarters of this year, due to the impact of COVID-19 and other factors, the scale of China's service trade declined, but it showed a trend of stabilization, and the service export performance was significantly better than the import. From January to September, China's total import and export in services reached 3.39 trillion yuan, down 15.7% year-on-year. Among them, exports amounted to 1.3995 trillion yuan, down 1.5%, while imports reached 1.9905 trillion yuan, down 23.5%. The main feature is that the growth rate of export in services turned from negative to positive in September. China's service export reached 162.5 billion yuan in September, up 4.1% year on year, and the monthly growth rate turned from negative to positive. Among them, the export of insurance services reached 3.9 billion yuan, up 83.1%; exports of construction services reached 19.5 billion yuan, up 56.0%; exports of maintenance and repair services reached 4.5 billion yuan, up 27.0%; transport exports reached 33.6 billion yuan, up 21.8%. The deficit in trade in services was substantially reduced. In the first three quarters of this year, the decline in China's service exports stabilized. The decline in exports was smaller than that of imports by 22 percentage points, resulting in a 50% decline in the service trade deficit to 591 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 590.1 billion yuan. The proportion of knowledge-intensive service trade increased. From January to September, the import and export of knowledge-intensive services reached 1.4931 trillion yuan, up 9.0% year on year, accounting for 44.0% of the total import and export of services, up 10%. Among them, the export of knowledge-intensive services came to 779.5 billion yuan, up 8.6%, accounting for 55.7% of the total, up 5.2 percentage points. The import of knowledge-intensive services reached 713.6 billion yuan, up 9.4% and accounting for 35.8% of the total, up 10.8%. Imports and exports of travel services have declined markedly. The continued spread of the pandemic has seriously affected the import and export of travel services worldwide. From January to September, China's import and export of travel services reached 806.4 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 46.3%, dragging down the overall service trade. Excluding travel services, China's exports and imports of services grew by 2.4% in the first three quarters.
